How it works

Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of your profit. In 2026 the Social Security part stops at $184,500 of combined wages and self-employment earnings. Earnings above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly) also pay a 0.9% additional Medicare tax.

Income tax uses the 2026 brackets on your profit plus any wages, minus half of your self-employment tax, the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly) and, below the 2026 income threshold ($201,750 single, $403,500 joint), the 20% qualified business income deduction.

You generally need to pay estimated tax if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file. 2026 payments are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.

We keep it simple on purpose: no credits, no itemized deductions, no state tax, no retirement contributions or self-employed health insurance. Use it to plan, then confirm with a tax pro.
