Phone, internet and business-use %

Use your cell phone or home internet personally too? Set a business-use % once in Settings → Categories and only that share counts on your taxes, while the full bill stays recorded.

Updated

Most owners use one phone and one home internet plan for work and for life. The IRS lets you deduct only the business part, so Tallibook keeps the whole bill on record and counts just your business share on your taxes.

Set it once

Only owners and admins can do this.

  1. Step 1: Go to Settings → Categories (on a phone: More → Categories).
  2. Step 2: Tap the pencil next to Cell phone (or Internet).
  3. Step 3: Type your Business use %, for example 70. Leave it blank for 100%.
  4. Step 4: Tap Save.

That's it. Every phone bill you add after that, and every one already in the year, counts at 70%. Change it any time; your reports update right away.

What you'll see

  • On the expense screen, the line under the category says how much comes off your taxable income, for example: "70% of this, $84.00, comes off your taxable income (your 70% business use)."
  • The Schedule C summary puts only the business part on line 25 and shows what you paid next to it, with a Business use note for your preparer.
  • The tax season pack's expenses file has a Business use column, and README.txt lists the categories you set.
  • Your profit and loss still shows the full bills you paid.

How to pick a fair number

Estimate the share of time or use that's for work, and keep a short note of how you got it, such as a typical month of call logs. A number you can explain beats a round guess. Not sure? Ask your accountant.

Phone & internet

Had Tallibook before October 2026? Your older Phone & internet category still works and keeps its expenses. New bills can go in Cell phone or Internet, so each can have its own business-use %. When you're done with the old one, archive it.
